Žilina and its customs

The day following our arrival we visited the center of Žilina but just the main streets. Near our hotel, there is the St Mary’s square. The houses which are around this square are each of different colors.

We passed on the main square of Žilina. Its name is Andrej Hlinka’s square. On this square, there is two beautiful monuments: The cathedral of the Holy Trinity and Burian’s tower.

Last night, we were invited for a Slovak dinner. We took the train to Strečno approximately 12km from Žilina. We walked to the panoramic restaurant. The view was amazing! We can see the mountains with snow on their summit and on the cliff is perched the oldest castle of Slovakia.

At the restaurant we ate the national dish Bryndzové Halusky. After the dinner, a folklore group sang traditional songs. The men played violin, accordion and double bass and the women sang. This dinner allowed us to meet the other Erasmus students and discover the customs of Slovakia. It was a very good night, but it is strange for us to eat the dinner at 5p.m.
